Why were they there?
Because I was dropping off a friend and had said, "Don't lock." The passenger door was against concrete and I was going to squeeze in. I didn't have my purse and I have a huge key chain. So I was walking my friend in and then saying goodbye to him. But he locked and I locked my side (which wasn't blocked by concrete).
So I have to hear him for the 45 minutes -- in the dry heat -- it takes for a locksmith to get there.
And he thinks he knows music.
And what do you do during something like that?
He starts with he graduated in 1969 and CCR is his favorite group. I'm not a fan but I didn't say that. Just made small talk. Then he asked me who from back then I liked?
Joni Mitchell, Jim Morrison --
He cuts me off. Never heard of Joni, hates Jim.
And it never got better from there.
If someone doesn't know Joni and they know that period of music, I have nothing to say to them because our tastes are too different.
And that was the case.
And knowledge base as well.
He kept insisting to me that Steven Tyler was in Jefferson Airplane. He was so insistant, in fact, that I had to stop and do a self-check.
That was far from his only 'fact' that was wrong.
And for 45 minutes I had to hear how __ and ___ had an affair to get back at Mick Jagger. The two (straight) women had an affair?
Yeah, he says, his buddy Oscar knows everything and told him about it.
It was hot and he knew nothing. But thought he knew everything. Neil Diamond, for example, recorded "Like A Rolling Stone."
That was Bob Dylan, I corrected.
No, he insisted, it was Neil Diamond.
And so my day went.
Closing with C.I.'s "Iraq snapshot:"
(Ms) Sanaa Saeed, government employee, mother of (now) three, "Who?? Oh, yes. I don't know why he came. And I don't care. They said that we will be able to choose rulers who will take care of us -- and instead, the rulers are taking care only of themselves, as usual. So why should I care? What has changed in my life? I will tell you what has changed: I now live in an ugly city filled with fear. I have less electricity -- less water -- less brothers and cousins and one less son. This is what this man (Biden) and his country have brought me".
