Muse has been kicking around for so long that they can be called an "alternative rock band" and no one will giggle.
In fact, their song "Madness" became an Alternative Radio staple this year.
And it's that song that makes me feel really sad for them.
"Now I have finally seen the light and now I have finally realized what you need."
Not only is that trite for anyone over 21, it tips off too much to the influence.
The song features a vocal about to burst at the seams from straining so hard to sound like Michael Hutchence (INXS' original vocalist until his death).
And then, throughout, it's ripping off George Michael's "I Want Your Sex" and "Faith."
That's before you sprinkle Queen on it.
If Sally Field's Sybill had recorded in a music studio, this is what her recording would have sounded like.
It's not bad. It's just all a bit too over-familiar for you to feel good about getting excited over it.
