Stevie Nicks

ethel the whistleblower

From a few hours ago, that's Isaiah's THE WORLD TODAY JUST NUTS "Ethel Mertz, Whistle-blower.''  Sunday, my "Kat's Korner: Just an invitation would have been just fine" went up.  It's a review of Stevie Nicks' STAND BACK -- a two disc (on vinyl) collection.

I really was shocked to see it and other vinyl at Wal-Mart.

E-mails on the review have focused on that.  A number have seen Fleetwood Mac's GREATEST HITS at their Wal-Marts.  They didn't have it at the one I was at.  I actually would have gotten that as well as Stevie's STAND BACK.  I didn't get RUMOURS because I already own it, from years ago, on vinyl.  I have all of the 70s Fleetwood Mac albums and MIRAGE and TANGO IN THE NIGHT on vinyl (MIRAGE and TANGO are from the 80s).  But I don't have GREATEST HITS.

It's always exciting and fun to find something in person.  You can go online and order, I know, but I always get a rush when I see something in person that I want.

The other big issue about the review, in the e-mails, has been Stevie Nicks' "For What It's Worth."

I wasn't at all embarrassed to note that I really overlooked the song when IN YOUR DREAMS because that's what happened.  I wasn't embarrassed to give Elaine credit because she's the one who turned me on to the song.  She got it from day one, got how great it was, and she talked it up and we listened to it when we were together or talking on the phone.

But I am surprised that a number of you wrote to say that it's also a song that you've grown to love in the time since the album came out.

For me, "Silver Springs" was a song I liked but didn't love until after about three months (I'm referring to when it was a B-side to the single "Go Your Own Way.")

It's a great song ("For What It's Worth," but also "Silver Springs").

Let's wind down with some Tweets about Stevie Nicks.

Closing with C.I.'s "Iraq snapshot:"

Monday, September 30, 2019.  Unethical behavior doesn't isolate itself, it breeds and reproduces.

Starting in the US where the race for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination continues.  And where the media continues to lie.  Yesterday, on CINDY SHEEHAN'S SOAPBOX, Cindy spoke with Danny Haiphong about the new book he has written with Roberto Sirvent entitled AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM AND AMERICAN INNOCENCE: A PEOPLE'S HISTORY OF FAKE NEWS FROM THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR TO THE WAR ON TERROR.

But you don't have to go historical.  Look at this:

That is a distraction.  It is a willful 'reporting' to mislead.

Who the hell has ever accused Hunter Biden of doing any work at all -- good or bad?

He doesn't do work.  He's a grifter, a con artist, making money off Daddy's name.

He joined the company in May of 2014, approximately two years later, Joe Biden's getting the man investigating the company fired.

That's why the company hired Joe's son, for that kind of corrupt influence.  Consider Hunter's $50,000 a month protection money.  It's a racket and THE LOS ANGELES TIMES is playing the idiot to distract you from reality.

Bill Maher, of all people, is bothered by the corruption.

Hunter has no experience but is hired for $50,000.  What were they buying?  Daddy's influence.

That's corruption.

No one in their right mind believes Hunter was hammering out details or working in a plant.  They know he was hired solely because his father was the Vice President and because they could use that if they needed to.

When the company was under investigation, they used Hunter's daddy to get the prosecutor removed.

Influence peddling, corruption, call it whatever you want but it's unethical and it's not supposed to take place in the US -- not from our public servants.

Donald Trump does it!

If he does it from the White House -- meaning since he was sworn in -- call him out.  Let him have it.  We're not THE TRUMPIAN covering all things Donald.  I do not like him and I have not spent the last years obsessing over him -- I question the mental health of those who have.  But if he's done it, you're not going to find me defending him.

Joe Biden is someone I have known for years and I know Joe Biden knows better.  So, yes, I will call him out.  He now wants to be president of the United States, so, yes, I will call him out.  The way his son and his brother James have profited is disgusting and unethical.

These little scams had real world consequences.  For example, corruption got even worse in Iraq after 2009.  Who was tasked with oversight?  Joe Biden.  And how can Joe, with all of  his unethical issues, call out corruption in Iraq, let alone address it, when he's the poster boy for corruption?

He's the poster boy especially in Iraq where his brother James was awarded a $1.5 billion contract for reconstruction.  James has no construction experience.  No real experience at all other than cashing in on whatever office his brother Joe has held.

This is disgusting and it is unethical.   From Sarah Chayes' "Hunter Biden’s Perfectly Legal, Socially Acceptable Corruption" (THE ATLANTIC):.

Let’s start with Hunter Biden. In April 2014, he became a director of Burisma, the largest natural-gas producer in Ukraine. He had no prior experience in the gas industry, nor with Ukrainian regulatory affairs, his ostensible purview at Burisma. He did have one priceless qualification: his unique position as the son of the vice president of the United States, newborn Ukraine’s most crucial ally. Weeks before Biden came on, Ukraine’s government had collapsed amid a popular revolution, giving its gas a newly strategic importance as an alternative to Russia’s, housed in a potentially democratic country. Hunter’s father was comfortably into his second term as vice president—and was a prospective future president himself.
There was already a template, in those days, for how insiders in a gas-rich kleptocracy could exploit such a crisis using Western “advisers” to facilitate and legitimize their plunder—and how those Westerners could profit handsomely from it.

Not only is it unethical, it should be unacceptable.

'Donald Trump is a crook!'

Do you need a cookie?  A pat on the back?  You just figured that out, did you?

I don't really give a damn what Donald Trump is.  I didn't vote for him.  I do not like him.  There is nothing he can do that would surprise me.

I've known and avoided him for years.

The fact that you're only now realizing what was obvious so long ago, decades, goes to your stupidity and maybe it's that stupidity that allows you to play, "DONALD TRUMP IS WORSE!"

So is polio.  So are many other things.

And none of that changes the unethical behavior that Joe Biden has engaged in.  He has allowed his family to rake in large amounts of money by selling his potential influence.  That is conduct unbecoming.  He's not fit to run for president.

If you can't stand up for yourself, don't look to some politician to play superhero and rescue you.  Joe's behavior is unacceptable.  And you can pretend otherwise, but you're cheating yourself.  You're cheating yourself out of an ethical future, you're cheating yourself out of a system with accountability.

The desperation to look the other way is ridiculous.  You're harming yourself, you're harming future generations.  Unethical behavior does not need to be excused, it needs to be called out.  And if you don't call it out, you are part of the corruption.

"Joe Wilson has passed away."  As noted at THIRD, Joe Biden's not said a word.  Not even a Tweet. Along with calling out Bully Boy Bush's lie about Saddam Hussein seeking yellowcake uranium from Africa, Joe's career includes service in the State Dept:

Having become fluent in French as a teenager, Wilson entered the US Foreign Service in 1976, where he would be employed until 1998.[4]
From January 1976 through 1998, he was posted in five African nations; as a general services officer in Niamey, Niger, (his first assignment) he was "responsible for keeping the power on and the cars running, among other duties".[3] From 1988 to 1991, he was the Deputy Chief of Mission (to US Ambassador to Iraq April Glaspie) at the US Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq. In the wake of Saddam's invasion of Kuwait in 1990, he became the last American diplomat to meet with Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, sternly telling him in very clear terms to leave Kuwait (Wilson, The Politics of Truth 107–27). When Hussein sent a note to Wilson (along with other embassy heads in Baghdad) threatening to execute anyone sheltering foreigners in Iraq as a deterrent, Wilson publicly repudiated the President by appearing at a press conference wearing a homemade noose around his neck and declaring, "If the choice is to allow American citizens to be taken hostage or to be executed, I will bring my own fucking rope." [5] Despite Hussein's warnings, Wilson sheltered more than 100 Americans at the embassy and successfully evacuated several thousand people (Americans and other nationals) from Iraq. For his actions, he was called "a true American hero" by President George H. W. Bush.[6] From 1992 to 1995, he served as US ambassador to Gabon and Sรฃo Tomรฉ and Prรญncipe.[4]
From 1995 to 1997, Wilson served as Political Advisor (POLAD) to the Commander in Chief of US Armed Forces, Europe (EUCOM), in Stuttgart, Germany. From 1997 until 1998, when he retired, he helped direct Africa policy as Special Assistant to President Bill Clinton and as National Security Council Senior Director for African Affairs.[7]

Some how, Joe Biden misses all of that -- intentionally.

That period of time, when Joe Wilson stood up to Bully Boy Bush, isn't a time Joe Biden wants to remember because he comes off craven and cowardly at best.  While Joe Wilson called out the lies leading to the Iraq War, Joe Biden embraced those lies.

Meanwhile in Iraq?

Breaking: Big protests in against the decision to remove General Abdul Wahab al-Saadi. The Sunni city defending a Shiite officer from the south of the country. Remarkable

What's going on?  Lawk Ghafuri (RUDAW) reported Saturday:

After he liberated Mosul and defeated the Islamic State (ISIS) on the ground in Iraq, Lt. Gen. Abdul Wahab al-Saadi was removed from his position as commander of Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Forces (ICTS) on Friday by order of Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi who transferred Saadi to the Defense Ministry.
The decision shocked Saadi and angered Iraqis, who rallied to support him on social media.

Being relegated to the sidelines is a “humiliation to my military history,” Saadi said in an interview with Iraqi TV channel iNews.

AFP offered:

The decision has sparked allegations of a purge of officials seen as unfavourable to Iraq's Hashed al-Shaabi paramilitary force, which includes factions close to Tehran.
An Iraqi government official who requested anonymity said pro-Iran factions within the Hashed had "personally" lobbied for Saadi's removal.
"These groups were operating outside the state and the only barrier was the CTS," the official told AFP.
"The idea is to sideline him to bring somebody close to Iran and no longer have the CTS as a check."
Political commentator Ghaleb al-Shabandar said the move was "the beginning of the Iraqi army's dismantling and handover to the Hashed and other armed groups"
Journalist Mustafa Habib walks us through in this thread:

Important thing is happening in : In an unexpected move, PM Adil Abd Al-Mahdi today issued an order to take off all field military roles of General Abdul Wahab al-Saadi the most famous officer in the Iraqi security forces, who is popular & respected by the Iraqi people. (1)

  • In unusual response, al-Saadi told local channel: "I told the PM that it an insult to me & to my military history, I will not implement it, I prefer to retire, the Parliament Speaker offered me a few months ago post of defense minister, but I refused because Im field soldier" (2)

  • Now, Iraqis have launched one of the biggest campaign on Twitter to rejected the Prime Minister's decision, support for Saadi, they put Hashtag: (We are all Abdul Wahab Saadi) became the Trend in Iraq by tens of thousands of tweets just in few hours.(3)

  • "Abu Fadl al-Abbas" faction leader Aws al-Khafaji who was pro-Iran but turned against them months ago then was arrested by PMF, also announces his support to Saadi, he says in tweet "there are more such decisions in the future" (4)

  • Here is the thing: the story goes back to April 2015 during battle 2 retake fom , al-Saadi insisted 2 ask help Air strikes of the "Global Coalition" 2 reduce time&losses of battle, but the PMF especially Hadi Amiri refused & decided not participate in the battle(5)

  • But former PM al-Abadi decided to continue the battle without PMF, he support Saadi's plan to ask help of the "Global Coalition" Air strikes, the battle ended with the army's victory in just 3 weeks, then the PMF enter the city & all we know the story: (6)

  • After that, the PMF felt its reputation become bad and the army's popularity has risen for the first time since its collapse in in 2014. Since the battle of Tikrit, the dispute began, some factions close to Iran have accused Saadi of being an American agent! (7)

  • After the battles of Tikrit, Fallujah & Ramadi, Saadi's popularity rose, when the battle of began, Mosul residents knew him well & felt comfortable with his participation This is popular footage among Iraqis during Mosul battle, a little girl looking for Saadi to hug him:

  • Saadi on his Facebook page, post this within a few hours ago: "Tell those who are waiting for our fall that our stand in battlefields under enemy fire longer than their age" "I am proud of your stand with me. I promise I won't let you down"

Breaking: PM Abd Al-Mahdi in the first public comment on the removal of Saadi: "The decision is irreversible, use the media & social M by Saadi in his objection is big mistake and unacceptable", also the PM hints to accusation that Saadi visiting foreign embassies.

A chance encounter at a summer party on Martha’s Vineyard blossomed into an improbable but lasting friendship between Carly Simon and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. An intimate, vulnerable, and insightful portrait of the bond that grew between two iconic and starkly different American women, Carly Simon’s Touched by The Sun is a chronicle, in loving detail, of the late friendship she and Jackie shared. It is a meditation on the ways someone can unexpectedly enter our lives and change its course, as well as a celebration of kinship in all of its many forms.

This really is a time for books.  Patti Smith's new one came out last Tuesday, Debbie Harry's book comes out next Tuesday and Carly Simon's follow up to her best selling BOYS IN THE TREES.

Simon says, "When I first met Jackie, I didn’t imagine we had that much in common much less expect her to become my book editor, confidant, protective mother figure, and mischievous pal. She arrived when I least expected to make a new friend and she stayed up until the time of her death.  I’ve missed her deeply and am reminded of her every day. In the last few years, I found myself doing what I’ve done with all the other things in my life that were too big to look at directly and too important to understand fully as they were happening: I put it down on paper. I found that writing about our time together was the only way to begin to know what she meant to me. Publicly, Jackie was important to all of us, but privately, out of the public eye, I loved her.  I wanted to share my experience of her."

    Closing with C.I.'s "Iraq snapshot:"

    Friday, September 27, 2019.. Ethics.

In the United States, the race for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination continues.  Jim Newall (SLATE) notes:

While most of the news focus this week pertained to certain goings-on in the House of Representatives—goings-on that of course Elizabeth Warren was the first candidate to call for, in April—Warren has started to take Joe Biden’s lead. She led Biden narrowly, for the first time, in two national polls released this week, and she has taken the lead in the Iowa polling average as well. She took the lead in a New Hampshire poll. She is nearing the lead in Nevada. She is drawing healthy shares from supporters of both Clinton and Sanders in the 2016 primary contest. She is starting to see some movement among black voters. Democrats are the most enthusiastic about her candidacy. There is … nothing going wrong right now? Nothing! This newsletter likes to make jokes about how politicians are failing at politics, and she’s just not giving us anything.

So while Elizabeth is up, Joe is down, dragged down by his own actions.  Over at US NEWS AND WORLD REPORTS, Susan Milligan speaks with University of New Hampshire's Dante Scala:

Biden, in fact, might have some vulnerability on the Ukraine matter with voters, Scala says, because voters might wonder how and why the younger Biden went to work for a Ukrainian firm while his father was in the White House.
"It's not a great look, even though there's not any evidence of wrongdoing," Scala says.

There is absolutely the evidence of wrong doing.

This lowering of our standards is how we end up with presidents unfit to serve.

Joe Biden's son Hunter gets employed by a firm and that's the wrong doing.  Yes, Hunter needed a job.   Three months prior the US military had kicked him out of the reserves because of his use of cocaine.  They should have referred it over to a court, he should have been arrested.  Instead, they just kicked him out.  Three months later, with no experience to speak of, he's brought on and paid $50,000 a month.

That is unethical.  And his father at the time was vice president.  Joe then has interactions with the government of Ukraine.  That is unethical.

Hunter never should have taken the job to begin with.  Once he did, Joe should have been removed from any and all dealings with Ukraine.

It is unethical.  And as vice president, Joe insisting, "I didn't do anything wrong," isn't enough.  Joe has to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest.  He was the Vice President.  He has to be held to a higher standard while in that office.

It was Joe Biden’s family that almost kept him from running. Now, it could help drag him down.
Why it matters: The former vice president has to answer questions about family controversies just as Elizabeth Warren is catching him in the polls.
    • Hunter Biden was a paid board member of a Ukrainian gas company while his father was in the White House.
Top Democrats tell us they worry the Ukraine fracas winds up being an albatross for Biden because he'll be associated with an unpopular issue and process, and won't be able to shake questions about Hunter Biden.

No, wrong doing?  Corruption in office is wrong doing.  There is ample public knowledge that suggest wrong doing without any investigation.

Joe did not do his job as vice president because that job included avoiding even the appearance of a conflict of interest.  Joe did not do his job.

His actions look smarmy, his actions appear unethical.  And that's without any probe taking place.

The usual idiots of the faux left are refusing to look seriously at what is right before their eyes.  In some cases, they're afraid of 'helping' Donald Trump.  Try helping yourselves, you idiots.  This is about democracy, this is about fairness, this is about basic expectations of those in public office.

I can understand the press being leery to go into too much detail after the verbal attacks on THE NEW YORK TIMES.  I don't like THE TIMES.  I'm not a fan.  That was long ago established.  But they published an article -- this one -- that I've read over and over trying to understand the need to attack the paper for it.

Didn't REUTERS already report that the whistle-blower or 'whistle-blower' was CIA?

I don't understand the anger at NYT.  The person is of public interest.  The news report -- fairly bland to begin with -- serves the public interest.

But you have all these idiots claiming on Twitter that NYT did something wrong.  Then claiming that they've cancelled their subscriptions -- most never subscribed.  Some even bigger idiots insisting that they're going to subscribe to the physical paper of THE WASHINGTON POST -- who's going to deliver that to most of your homes?  Lots of luck with that.

How could NYT do this!!!! They insist the paper was wrong and you protect a source and -- The person who filed the complaint is not a source to the paper.  People don't even understand journalism.  It's not -- REPORT WHAT I LIKE!!!!!

    The immaturity is just astounding.

    On impeachment . . .

One person wrote a lengthy e-mail to the public account stating that the snapshot was brief because I was avoiding the topic of impeachment?

No, that’s not why it was brief.  I’ve explained why it was brief.  I will probably note a hearing in Monday’s snapshot.  I went back and forth over including it today but wanted to just focus on ethics.

The e-mail informs me that I was wrong (wouldn’t be the first time) when I stated that I didn’t believe Donald Trump broke a law as it was being described in press reports.  I still don’t.  Based on the latest details.  If you want to say it was unethical, I’ll hop on board that.  But the Justice Dept was correct not to prosecute.  If Congress wants to pass a law, they can do so.  Whether or not the Court would uphold it is a big if, but they can pass a law on this.  Currently, there is no law.

The e-mailer, like Nancy Pelosi yesterday, wants to insist that Donald was attempting to ensure that he won the 2020 election.

    You’re ascribing motive.

On someone you don’t even know.

As noted here many times over the years, and at THIRD, I do not like Donald Trump and that’s based upon my knowing him.

As someone who has known him over the years, I don’t think he was trying to get re-elected.

I think he’s on a kamikaze mission.  I’m ascribing motive but I’m basing it on my personal interaction with him in the past.  (And that’s limited, I’ve noted before that I would walk away if I saw him approaching.)

Bob Somerby and others have done crazy lunatic talk.  Donald’s not going to leave!!!! He’s going to lose the election and he’s not going to leave!!!!

First, there’s a good chance he will win the election.

Second, if he loses, he’ll leave and he’ll leave playing the victim and spend the rest of his life saying how the US screwed up and how every president after him screwed up.  That’s Donald.

You know what else is Donald? Thinking the world is against him.  “He didn’t even want to win!”  That’s what some said as the 2016 election approached and after.  Yes, he did.  But he didn’t think he would and he didn't want to be seen as wanting it as much as he did because he felt the world would then laugh if he lost.  That’s his low self-esteem.  That same low self-esteem tells him he probably won’t be re-elected.  As such, he’s out to destroy now.  This was about punishing others.  It was not, “Joe could beat me!”  It was, “Democrats have been corrupt and I’ll take out any I can on my way out the door.”  That’s Donald.

To be clear, I have not stated he will lose in 2020.  There’s a good chance he’ll win.  Especially if impeachment is pursued.  Especially if No-Enthusiasm Joe is the nominee.

But he has low self-esteem and that’s what he operates from.

“He has a huge ego!!!!”  He has bravado that covers (for some) his low self-esteem.

So I think he’s on a kamikaze mission to take out as many as he can before January 2021 when he fears/suspects/believes he will be leaving the White House.

That’s me ascribing motive.  I don’t deny it.  But I’d argue my insight is a little greater than some speaking on his possible motives.

Donald has low self-esteem.  If he lost the election, he would see it as part of the world victimizing him and would leave the White House.  I do not get the crazy that Bob Somerby has repeatedly preached on Donald locking himself in the White House after losing the election and refusing to go.

But I also don’t get the nonsense Bob preaches about Donald being crazy.  His actions do not surprise me, they do not mystify me.  I do not believe he’s insane.  I do believe he is the wounded child who never recovered.

    --------------
Note, the snapshot this morning included Stan's "PRODIGAL SON" -- I don't know how that happened but it was in here twice.  To be clear, Stan wrote that.  It also included the impeachment section 3 times.  That's been reduced to one.  Stan did a strong review of "PRODIGAL SON" and I want to be sure he gets credited for that.  Ava and I do our TV pieces at THIRD.  -- C.I., 9/27/19 12:37 pm EST.
