Isaiah's The World Today Just Nuts "The Arm Grab" went up last night and uses humor to make an important point.
Ann Powers has a music piece up at NPR that's worth reading. That said, I wish she'd cover women with the enthusiasm she does men lately. (The piece covers a newbie, a girl.) I read her nonsense on Leonard Cohen and thought Ann needed to listen to an album before reviewing it. That has to do with observations about the album other than whether it was any good. But on that aspect, the album sucked.
I've never been a Cohen fan because the Old Testament isn't drilled into Catholics the way it is some religions. We're raised to believe in redemption and glory. Leonard Cohen is strictly black and white in his views and beliefs. He's an ugly sermon. That never ends.
As a singer, he's never had a voice. (His son Adam has a better voice than Leonard ever did.) But now he sounds like death.
And there was Ann raving about it and bringing up Bob Dylan's Time Out of Mind and I was left to realize, "Ann, where were you for Joni's Shine?"
Forget Carly. I think it would kill Ann Powers to ever give Carly her damn due.
But there is Ann raving over yet another bad album by an elderly man and talking about how great it is. And she doesn't do that with women. She didn't scream for Shine from the rooftops and talk about the maturity and blah blah blah.
Please read "CPB failing the mandate for diversity (Ava and C.I..." from yesterday. Ava and C.I. are taking on a show that airs five hours daily and reinforces the all male rock canon. The program's Undercurrents and it got a grant for CPB for diversity but it's not diverse. And when less than a fifth of your artists played are women, you shouldn't be getting any grant from the CPB.
Closing with C.I.'s "Iraq snapshot:"
