That's Isaiah's The World Today Just Nuts "Alice In Barackland" went up this morning.
I was at the House Veterans Affairs Committee this morning and what stood out to me the most (other than what C.I. covered) was when someone from Florida, let me look his name up.
Okay, it was Gus Bilirakis. He's a Congress member from Florida who serves on the Committee. And his big moment was his pissing on women's rights -- and yes, female veterans are women.
You know, he wanted to say, a lot of the programs for homeless veterans come from faith based programs and if these outlets follow their faith and refuse to prescribe birth control, they can face a penalty and those financial payments might mean they had less to spend on the homeless so it could hurt homeless veterans.
Hey, Gus, if I'm a homeless female veteran, you better make sure I'm getting birth control because otherwise you're going have me and a whole mess of kids homeless before you know it.
So anyway, Eric Shinseki, the VA Secretary, explains that he doesn't think that's likely and then when he's done speaking, Ranking Member Bob Filner makes a comment like, "Geez, I thought we might make it through one hearing without you bringing up birth control!"
I wanted to laugh. But I was kind of surprised he had said it.
Later on US House Rep. Corinne Brown would note that birth control was part of female veterans healthcare and I was glad she did because Gus was just attacking it. (That's why I loved it when Filner piped off.) And Corrine Brown was just so forceful about it with a don't-mess-with-me-boys-I'm-the-only-one-present-who-knows-a-thing-about-giving-birth. (Linda Sanchez had left the hearing by then.)
I also like it when she said, about the need for jobs for veterans, that they were like "my grandmother's sweet potato pie" because everybody deserves a slice.
Tomorrow night I'll put in Filner's actual quote. I'm sure someone will say, "He didn't say that!" So before you e-mail me, I'll put it in tomorrow. C.I. and Ava are speaking to a college group and I don't want to dig through her stuff looking for her notes but I know it's in C.I.'s notes because she pretty much transcribes entire hearings we attend.
Closing with C.I.'s "Iraq snapshot:"
