Fontella Bass has passed away. The R&B singer is most famous for "Rescue Me." Many listeners of 'classic radio' today wrongly think the 60s hit was sung by Aretha. There is a tiny similarity between both women's voices, a tiny one.
Fontella's hit is a beloved one. The best cover, I believe, was Diana Ross' version. She recorded the song on her Swept Away album. The worst? I like Pat Benatar but her version on the Speed soundtrack grated on my ears. (More for the music than for Pat's singing.)
The singer passed. Why are we talking about a song? Not only was it a big hit, but it was also a song she co-wrote.
Rolling Stone has a really good picture of her from 1972 here.
What a week, right? Christmas Eve, Christmas. Wild weather around the country (and in Iraq too where it's flooding in Baghdad). And three big deaths: Jack Klugman, Charles Durning and Fontella Bass.
Closing with C.I.'s "Iraq snapshot:"
